Quick and easy install…

This smartphone holder can be fitted to any pipe or tubing with a diameter between 8mm to 35mm. This makes it suitable for mounting on just about any handlebars, mirrors, or cross braces. Fixing it is easy and doesn’t require the use of any tools. The rear of the holder has an integrated knob for tightening the clamp onto the handlebars. It’s quick and easy to adjust.

There’s a choice of two sizes. The medium size will accommodate an iPhone 4 and the large size an iPhone 6+ or equivalent sized phone.

How does it work?

It holds your phone with three spring-loaded arms. These are easy to put your phone into and take your phone out of. But, even better, they hold your phone super-tight. Even over rough ground, your phone is going nowhere. Additionally, to ensure your phone isn’t damaged, there are well-padded rubber corners on each of the arms.

Sturdy grip…

It has a sturdy clamp-based mounting system that will fit handlebars that measure 7/8”, 1”, 1 1/8”, and 1.25”. You simply attach the mount to the handlebars by adding the right size of custom bush. The bushes make it suitable for use with most sizes of handlebars though unfortunately, it’s too wide to fit most mirror arms.

Fitting the holder is quick and easy. It requires no tools as it’s secured using an integrated clamp knob. It shouldn’t take you more than minutes to get this attached to your motorcycle handlebars and ready to go.

Versatile…

One of its top strengths is that it can hold just about any phone. It can hold all smartphones up to 3.4” wide and ½ thick. It does this via two industrial strength clamp arms.

The arms can hold your phone either in standard or portrait mode. Additionally, all makes of the phone will benefit from being able to use the rear-facing camera unhindered. Plus, the cradle arms make it easy to house and remove your phone single-handed.

You’ll need a phone case…

The cradle is well padded, so there’s no chance of it getting damaged by the mount. However, unfortunately, because most of the phone is exposed at the back, it leaves it liable to getting damaged by flying dirt and debris. This is a weakness of this kind of system. We’d strongly recommend using a phone case back to protect your phone because of it.

This is a strong and durable phone mount made from aluminum. This means it will never corrode regardless of what the weather throws at it.

Slim-line fit…

The GUB will fit on handlebars that measure 31.8mm, 25.4mm, and 22.2mm. It comes with three different bushes to achieve a snug fit. Unlike some other phone holders, you will need a hex key to secure it to your bars, but it’s hardly a deal-breaker and is still quick to fit. One of the advantages of using a hex bolt is that it achieves a more slim-line profile.

Another big plus is that it can accommodate just about any size and make of phone. GUB provides an extensive list of what phones will fit. However, it’s highly unlikely that your phone won’t be on the list.

Safe and secure, but maybe too much…

Securing the phone into the mount is done by tightening the knurled clamp bolt. Frankly, this is a bit cumbersome and hardly smooth to operate. There’s no doubt that it holds the phone securely, but it’s a two-handed operation and takes time to put in and take out. If you have to regularly take your phone out of the mount, we wouldn’t recommend this one.

OK, but is it stable in the mount?

Once in the mount, it can be rotated through 360 degrees, and so you can have the phone in both landscape or portrait mode. The claws hold the phone at the edges, so none of the screen is obscured.

Although it’s a secure mounting system, it does tend to vibrate more than some alternatives. Plus, there’s no padding on either the claws or the back of the mount. This, therefore, leaves your phone liable to scratching if it’s not in a case. An unfortunate omission, in our opinion.

The design?

It’s helpful to be able to replace either of the parts rather than the whole system. Plus, if you regularly use more than one bike, you can buy two composite socket arms and just one universal grip to save a little cash.

The phone holder can be fixed onto any size of handlebars quickly and easily. It doesn’t require tools to fit as it has an integrated plastic knob for fixing. Although it will fit onto handlebars, it should be noted that the clamp is too wide to fit on mirror stalks.

Does it protect your phone?

The cradle arms are padded and will not damage your phone. If you don’t use a case, that will be OK. The rear of the holder will also not scratch the back of your phone.

This is an inexpensive option that can be used on motorcycles as well as bicycles. It will fit any handlebar between 0.9” to 1.3”. Fitting doesn’t require tools as it has an integrated screw-like plastic knob for fixing.

Stays put…

The holder has two ways to hold the phone, and we like that a lot. It gives an extra layer of security and gives an extra level of confidence that your phone isn’t going to end up on the floor. However, although it holds your phone securely, it would be nice if there was a little extra vibration dampening.

It holds your phone at the sides by two sprung-loaded padded claws. Plus, there is a silicone strap that pulls over all four corners of your phone. It’s easy to both put on and take off, it doesn’t interfere with your phone’s controls, and it doesn’t obscure the screen.

Sounds good?

We think so. We also like that the holder comes with an extra two silicone straps. Since this is the first part of the holder liable to wear, it’s a beneficial inclusion. Just be sure to regularly check the silicone strap you’re using for wear or damage.

Better safe than sorry!

When clamped onto your bars, the phone can be moved around 360 degrees thanks to the ball and socket design. This makes it easy to position into the perfect viewing position. Additionally, the ball and socket are stiff enough not to shake loose but loose enough that you don’t need to be a competitive weight lifter to move it into place.

It uses the same fitting system found on the Givi Smart Clip we previously reviewed. This means you get a premium-made clamp that can be fitted onto any tubular surface between 8mm to 35mm in diameter. Unlike most phone holders, you can therefore fix it to mirrors as well as handlebars.

What differentiates the Givi S957B Smartphone Holder from the other holders in our review is that it has a waterproof cover. But, in many ways, this can be a double-edged sword.

Let us explain…

The obvious advantage is that it protects your phone from rain. Now that’s undoubtedly a good thing as no matter how water resistant your phone is supposed to be, exposure to driving rain is never recommended.

The other positive is that it comes with a sunshade that covers the top and most of the sides. This might not seem like a serious issue, but if you live in a predominantly all-year-round sunny climate, it is. Trying to see the screen when the sun is at its highest can be a nightmare.

So, what are the negatives?

The first is that you’re very much restricted to the size of the phone that will fit. Its size will clearly limit the maximum size of your phone. However, if you use a phone that’s too small, it will flop around inside the case, which can make screen orientation difficult. Additionally, it can make the controls on the side of your phone hard to operate.

The other big negative is that it’s harder to operate the touchscreen. Yes, we know; Givi reassures us that it has a touch-sensitive surface. And that’s great. But just try telling that to your fingers and phone. It’s not that it doesn’t work; it’s more the fact that it can be inconsistent.

A few compromises…

On the whole, where weather conditions dictate, it’s an excellent choice. However, just be very aware of some of the compromises that come with it. If you’re happy with these, then all will be well.
