Connectivity…

In order to playback DVDs, you have a couple of options. You can use the HDMI port or get an ISO to RCA adapter to hook up a portable DVD player.

To make things much easier, you will also find a USB and SD card slot on the side of it, though. These ports support flash drives and memory cards up to 128 gigabytes in size, so you shouldn’t be running short of things to watch anytime soon.

Video clarity differs from one monitor to the other, though. The primary screen has a resolution of 1024×600 pixels, while the secondary monitor only has 800 x 480 pixels. This difference in resolution isn’t too noticeable, but we did feel that the higher resolution screen handled bright light better.

Portability…

Unlike the other DVD players we have looked at, you can unplug these and use them when they aren’t connected to your car. The main screen with the DVD player has a battery that will charge when plugged in.

Once the battery is completely charged, just remove it from its mount, and you can use it for up to five hours. The secondary monitor doesn’t have an integrated battery, so you will need to plug it into the primary monitor to use it simultaneously.

However…

When using both monitors at once, you will be limited to three hours of playback time as well. Besides just DVD playback, you can plug in an SD card or USB stick and play back content that way.

It comes with gray, black, and beige covers, allowing it to match your vehicle’s interior. Installing it isn’t quite as easy as some of the other headrest players we have seen, though.

Let us explain…

You will notice wiring coming out from the headrest posts that need to be channeled through your seatback. Depending on your seat, you may have a flap at the bottom that will allow you access inside its cover.

If you don’t have any way to get the wires out of your seat cover, you will need to make a small hole in it to do so. This will permanently change your seats, so be very careful before doing this.

Playback…

Unfortunately, this Soundstream headrest doesn’t have an integrated DVD player. So, if you want to playback physical DVDs, you will need to connect up to one yourself.

This headrest player does have a USB port, so you can playback media that way. Also on offer is an integrated FM transmitter and a headphone jack.

How about the picture?

Once you get something playing on the monitor, the picture quality is respectable. The small 7-inch screen has a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels and gets relatively bright.

The one standout quality of this headrest DVD player is its cost-friendly price. You can’t find much cheaper for a replacement headrest with an integrated screen than this product from Soundstream.

Next up in this best headrest DVD players review is a model moving up in screen size. This 13.3-inch player from XTRONS has an integrated octa-core processor with 2 gigabytes of RAM, and it runs Android.

This makes for a pretty fluid experience when using the touchscreen or playing back content. Because of the power that this octa-core processor provides, you can even playback ultra hi-def content without lag as well.

Superior picture quality…

No matter what you are watching, the picture quality is up there with the best of them. Because of the screen’s massive size and the IPS technology onboard, one screen will most likely be enough for everyone to see in the back seat.

It doesn’t have a physical DVD player, but it does have integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, allowing you to playback content wirelessly. You can also download apps and mirror your smart device to the screen as well.

Multiple connectivity options…

You also have the choice to use HDMI, RCA, USB, and SD cards. For sound output, you will find your typical FM transmitter on hand, as well as a 3.5mm jack and RCA cables.

XTRONS has also included a set of wireless headphones with this headrest player. They work well, but the audio quality isn’t anything special.

Separate playback or mirror…

This will allow you to playback separate movies on each player at the same time. You can mirror the content from one player on to the other as well if you connect the monitors up to one another with the provided RCA cables, though.

Each player also comes with its own game disc and a small gamepad. Depending on how you set up the monitors, you can even play games against the person sitting next to you.

Headphones…

During our tests, we noticed that when both players are set to two different frequencies, they still cause interference with one another.

Audiovox’s AVXMTGHR9HD headrest has a screen size of 9-inches. Unlike the other DVD players in this review, this one has a backlit LED screen. And even though this model’s screen only has a resolution of 800 x 400 pixels, the picture quality is superb. Thanks to the LED backlight, the screen gets exceptionally bright, and colors are vibrant without appearing washed out.

That’s not all…

Installing this DVD player will require you to run wires through your seat just like the Soundstream headrest we looked at did. You will also find spacers included, so the headrest sits securely and doesn’t wobble as well.

Once installed, using this DVD player is a simple process. You will notice a very evident “Push” button that gives you access to the DVD tray.

Connectivity compartment…

Next to that, you will find your various controls to play, pause, and stop playback. If you look at the bottom of the headrest, you will notice a small tab that opens up an additional compartment. Inside this compartment, you will have access to a USB, Auxiliary, Phone, and HDMI port, allowing you to playback from other devices.

For you to be able to hook up to any of these ports, you will need to raise the headrest, though.

In the following buying guide, we will point out a few key elements you should consider before buying a headrest DVD player.

Screen size

Just like TVs’ sizes vary, so do headrest DVD players. Some headrest monitors may be 13-inches wide, while some may only be 7-inches wide.
