1 Kakawise Car Headrest Video Player with Android 9.0 – Best Android Headrest Monitor for Movie Playback

The first player we are going to look at comes from Kakawise. It features a large 12.5-inch IPS touchscreen with a Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution.

While you won’t find an integrated DVD player on the monitor itself, it can still playback your favorite movies in various other ways. This Kakawise headrest video player acts more like a small computer or tablet since it uses Android 9.0 as an operating system.

Connectivity…

In order to playback DVDs, you have a couple of options. You can use the HDMI port or get an ISO to RCA adapter to hook up a portable DVD player.

To make things much easier, you will also find a USB and SD card slot on the side of it, though. These ports support flash drives and memory cards up to 128 gigabytes in size, so you shouldn’t be running short of things to watch anytime soon.

Also integrated into this player is Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for wireless connectivity and playback. Thanks to the Android operating system on hand, setting up Wi-Fi or Bluetooth is a very straightforward process.

Once connected…

You will then have access to Play Store. This will allow you to download popular apps like Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime directly to the player! You can then stream your favorite movies and shows right from the backseat of your vehicle. This video player also supports Airplay and Miracast, allowing you to mirror your smart device onto the screen once on the same network as well.

No matter what way you use this product to playback your media, picture quality is pretty excellent.

Practical but a little slow…

The integrated processor isn’t the quickest, so you may experience some lag when switching between apps, though.

Kakawise Car Headrest Video Player with Android 9.0

Our rating:4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Pros

  • Nice and vibrant 12.5” touchscreen.
  • Wi-Fi for direct download of apps.
  • Power through battery, cigarette lighter, or wall outlet.

Cons

  • Doesn’t have an integrated DVD player.

2 Pyle Smart Audio Video Entertainment System – Best Universal Mount Headrest DVD Player

Next up in this top headrest DVD players review is an entertainment system from Pyle. This headrest player has a sizable 10.5-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels.

Plenty of connections…

On the top of the unit, you will notice a rubber flap that protects the DVD slot below it. Located over on the right side of the monitor, you will also find a USB, HDMI, an SD card slot, headphones jack, and a power button.

Built-in to the DVD player is an IR receiver and FM transmitter. This will allow you to connect headphones wirelessly or to transmit audio directly through your car stereo.

Universal mounting…

Mounting this DVD player is very easy as long as you are near a cigarette lighter-type outlet. It comes with a universal bracket that will clamp on to your headrest poles. Once the brackets are secured to your headrest, you simply slide the monitor in place. The monitor bracket even allows you to adjust the screen up and down to provide better viewing angles.

You can power this entertainment system through your vehicle’s battery as well. It comes with a power harness, but the wiring is short, making it difficult to set up in larger vehicles like an SUV, though.

Pyle Smart Audio Video Entertainment System

Our rating:4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Pros

  • Integrated IR receiver.
  • Mount it on any type of vehicle headrest.
  • Comes with wireless remote.

Cons

  • Included power harness wiring isn’t very long.

3 XTRONS Digital Screen Car Headrest DVD Player x2 – Best Headrest DVD Player and Game Set

If you want to add two DVD players to your vehicle, this product from XTRONS has you covered. This pair of DVD players feature 10.1-inch touchscreens.

They include mounting brackets that allow you to attach them directly onto your headrest poles. Each screen comes with a cigarette lighter port adapter to power them.

Handheld if you choose…

The power cords are rather long, so you should be able to remove the monitors from their brackets and hold them in your hands as well.

Picture quality is decent at 1024 x 800 pixels, and the touchscreen is rather responsive. You may struggle with glare, though, since they do not get that bright.

Games…

Also included with this DVD player is a disc with over 500 games! The games included are very basic, but they do provide hours of entertainment. To play the games, you will want to use the included remotes. These remotes have almost 50 different tiny buttons and aren’t the easiest to use.

So when you are not playing games, we would recommend using the touchscreen if at all possible.

Headphones included…

XTRONS has also supplied a pair of wireless headphones for you to use with this video player. They each require two AAA batteries to operate that you will need to supply yourself.

You will also have access to a USB port that can read cards up to 32 gigabytes in size. RCA cables and an HDMI port are also on hand, allowing you to connect the DVD players up to a game console as well.

XTRONS Digital Screen Car Headrest DVD Player x2

Our rating:3.8 out of 5 stars (3.8 / 5)

Pros

  • Two 10.1-inch DVD players.
  • Each DVD player is region-free.
  • Pair of remotes and headphones provided.

Cons

  • Remotes are bulky and hard to use.

4 WONNIE Dual Portable Headrest CD/DVD Players – Best Portable Headrest DVD Player and Dual Monitor Set

Another worthy choice that comes with more than one screen is this DVD player bundle from WONNIE. You will find one screen comes with a DVD player integrated into it. The other screen acts as a monitor only. This will allow you to playback the same content on both screens at the same time.

Video clarity differs from one monitor to the other, though. The primary screen has a resolution of 1024×600 pixels, while the secondary monitor only has 800 x 480 pixels. This difference in resolution isn’t too noticeable, but we did feel that the higher resolution screen handled bright light better.

Portability…

Unlike the other DVD players we have looked at, you can unplug these and use them when they aren’t connected to your car. The main screen with the DVD player has a battery that will charge when plugged in.

Once the battery is completely charged, just remove it from its mount, and you can use it for up to five hours. The secondary monitor doesn’t have an integrated battery, so you will need to plug it into the primary monitor to use it simultaneously.

However…

When using both monitors at once, you will be limited to three hours of playback time as well. Besides just DVD playback, you can plug in an SD card or USB stick and play back content that way.

WONNIE Dual Portable Headrest CD/DVD Players

Our rating:4.4 out of 5 stars (4.4 / 5)

Pros

  • Monitors can be handheld.
  • Can be used for up to three hours simultaneously.
  • Control volume of the second monitor from the primary one.
  • Relatively inexpensive for two devices.

Cons

  • Included RCA cables are short.

5 Soundstream VH-70CC Universal Headrest – Best Replacement Headrest with USB Monitor

The Soundstream VH-70CC isn’t your typical media player that attaches to your headrest. Instead, the VH-70CC replaces your headrest entirely!

It comes with gray, black, and beige covers, allowing it to match your vehicle’s interior. Installing it isn’t quite as easy as some of the other headrest players we have seen, though.

Let us explain…

You will notice wiring coming out from the headrest posts that need to be channeled through your seatback. Depending on your seat, you may have a flap at the bottom that will allow you access inside its cover.

If you don’t have any way to get the wires out of your seat cover, you will need to make a small hole in it to do so. This will permanently change your seats, so be very careful before doing this.

Playback…

Unfortunately, this Soundstream headrest doesn’t have an integrated DVD player. So, if you want to playback physical DVDs, you will need to connect up to one yourself.

This headrest player does have a USB port, so you can playback media that way. Also on offer is an integrated FM transmitter and a headphone jack.

How about the picture?

Once you get something playing on the monitor, the picture quality is respectable. The small 7-inch screen has a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels and gets relatively bright.

The one standout quality of this headrest DVD player is its cost-friendly price. You can’t find much cheaper for a replacement headrest with an integrated screen than this product from Soundstream.

Soundstream VH-70CC Universal Headrest

Our rating:4.2 out of 5 stars (4.2 / 5)

Pros

  • Inexpensive.
  • Mounting spacers included.

Cons

  • Installation can be challenging.
  • Only has a 7-inch screen.

6 XTRONS Octa-Core Android 9.0 Headrest Player – Best Large Headrest DVD Player for UHD

Next up in this best headrest DVD players review is a model moving up in screen size. This 13.3-inch player from XTRONS has an integrated octa-core processor with 2 gigabytes of RAM, and it runs Android.

This makes for a pretty fluid experience when using the touchscreen or playing back content. Because of the power that this octa-core processor provides, you can even playback ultra hi-def content without lag as well.

Superior picture quality…

No matter what you are watching, the picture quality is up there with the best of them. Because of the screen’s massive size and the IPS technology onboard, one screen will most likely be enough for everyone to see in the back seat.

It doesn’t have a physical DVD player, but it does have integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, allowing you to playback content wirelessly. You can also download apps and mirror your smart device to the screen as well.

Multiple connectivity options…

You also have the choice to use HDMI, RCA, USB, and SD cards. For sound output, you will find your typical FM transmitter on hand, as well as a 3.5mm jack and RCA cables.

XTRONS has also included a set of wireless headphones with this headrest player. They work well, but the audio quality isn’t anything special.

One problem with large monitors…

The large size of this monitor may be problematic, depending on the size of your vehicle. It requires your headrest poles to be at least 4.13-inches wide.

You can slide the mounting brackets outward to fit headrest poles up to 7.08-inches wide. The bracket also allows you to slide the monitor away from the headrest and even swivel it up and down.

XTRONS Octa-Core Android 9.0 Headrest Player

Our rating:4.1 out of 5 stars (4.1 / 5)

Pros

  • Powerful enough to playback UHD content.
  • Large 13.3-inch screens.
  • Picture quality is top-notch.
  • Wireless headphones included.

Cons

  • May be too large to fit in small sedans.

7 Eonon Dual Car DVD Headrest Players – Best Headrest DVD Player Dual Monitor Set for Separate Playback

While some headrest DVD players that come in a set of two can’t work independently, this set from Eonon can.

These Eonon DVD players both have a 10.1-inch touchscreen and their own integrated DVD drives, USB, and SD Card ports.

Separate playback or mirror…

This will allow you to playback separate movies on each player at the same time. You can mirror the content from one player on to the other as well if you connect the monitors up to one another with the provided RCA cables, though.

Each player also comes with its own game disc and a small gamepad. Depending on how you set up the monitors, you can even play games against the person sitting next to you.

Headphones…

Eonon has also included a pair of IR wireless headphones with each DVD player. These headphones have a switch on the side of them, allowing you to listen to content from either player.

You can also output sound to your stereo by using the integrated FM transmitter on each player. While you can set each monitor to its own FM frequency, we wouldn’t recommend it.

Why’s that?

During our tests, we noticed that when both players are set to two different frequencies, they still cause interference with one another.

Both DVD players will mount to headrest poles. The provided bracket supports poles from 4.3 to 6.3 inches wide, so be sure to measure yours beforehand.

Eonon Dual Car DVD Headrest Players

Our rating:3.9 out of 5 stars (3.9 / 5)

Pros

  • Each player has its own DVD drive.
  • Wireless headphones to listen on either player.
  • Two cigarette lighter power adapters are provided.

Cons

  • Mounting bracket only fits 4.3 to 6.3-inch wide headrests.

8 Audiovox AVXMTGHR9HD Headrest – Best Headrest Replacement Backlit DVD Player

The final product we are going to look at is from Audiovox. This is another DVD player that will replace the stock headrests in your vehicle.

Audiovox’s AVXMTGHR9HD headrest has a screen size of 9-inches. Unlike the other DVD players in this review, this one has a backlit LED screen. And even though this model’s screen only has a resolution of 800 x 400 pixels, the picture quality is superb. Thanks to the LED backlight, the screen gets exceptionally bright, and colors are vibrant without appearing washed out.

That’s not all…

Installing this DVD player will require you to run wires through your seat just like the Soundstream headrest we looked at did. You will also find spacers included, so the headrest sits securely and doesn’t wobble as well.

Once installed, using this DVD player is a simple process. You will notice a very evident “Push” button that gives you access to the DVD tray.

Connectivity compartment…

Next to that, you will find your various controls to play, pause, and stop playback. If you look at the bottom of the headrest, you will notice a small tab that opens up an additional compartment. Inside this compartment, you will have access to a USB, Auxiliary, Phone, and HDMI port, allowing you to playback from other devices.

For you to be able to hook up to any of these ports, you will need to raise the headrest, though.

Audiovox AVXMTGHR9HD Headrest

Our rating:4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Pros

  • Very bright 9-inch LED screen.
  • Comes with black, shale, and pewter covers.
  • Included remote is small and easy to use.

Cons

  • HDMI port isn’t the easiest to get to.

Best Headrest DVD Players Buying Guide

Best Headrest DVD Players Review

In the following buying guide, we will point out a few key elements you should consider before buying a headrest DVD player.

Screen size

Just like TVs’ sizes vary, so do headrest DVD players. Some headrest monitors may be 13-inches wide, while some may only be 7-inches wide. The size of your headrest DVD player can affect your ability to mount it as well as its video resolution. A 7-inch screen might fit in a wide range of automobiles without taking up very much space at all.

On the other hand, a 13-inch screen will most likely end up being wider than your headrest is. So, if you have a smaller sedan, it might not even fit without becoming overly cumbersome.

Benefits of a larger screen…

A more extensive screen will make it easier for more people to enjoy it. They work exceptionally well in large SUVs and even allow passengers in the 3rd row to enjoy whatever might be playing.

If you have a small sedan, you might find that having two smaller screens works better than a single large one does, though. With two screens, you even have the possibility of playing back different content on each one.

You should always measure the available space between your headrests to figure out what will best fit in your vehicle and what will best supply entertainment to everyone.

Picture quality

With any type of monitor, bigger isn’t always necessarily better when it comes to picture quality. All the best headrest movie players’ screens have a maximum resolution.

The resolution of the screen is measured in pixels. Throughout this review, you have seen resolutions like 1920 x 1080, 800 x 400, and 1024 x 600. These numbers just represent how many pixels wide by high the screen can produce. To put it simply, screens that have a high resolution can create a better quality picture than those with lower resolutions.

That doesn’t mean that lower resolution screens aren’t any good, though! The type of content you’re playing on them also makes a difference in picture quality.

What to know?

You can play Full HD 1080p content on an 800 x 400 pixel screen, but you will miss out on small details because of the monitor’s limited resolution.

In reverse, if you play a low-resolution video on a high-def screen, then you may notice the image looks a little fuzzy since everything is blown up in size.

Screen type…

Best Headrest DVD Players Reviews

Another thing that affects picture quality is the type of screen it has. All of the headrest DVD players in this review technically have LCD screens. Not all of them have the same kind of backlighting, though.

A typical LCD screen will use fluorescent lights to illuminate the display. LCD screens with IPS technology use LEDs to increase viewing angles and color accuracy, but they often cost more.

LED-backlit displays will typically get brighter than your typical LCD or IPS screen. This makes them better for use in well-lit environments. They also consume less power, as well.

Connectivity

Depending on your headrest DVD player, connecting it up to various types of media will differ. Some of the products we have looked at have a DVD player integrated directly into them.

If you choose a model without an integrated DVD player, don’t fret. All the players we have looked at come with RCA inputs, allowing you to connect up to one. Some headrest DVD players even have USB and SD card ports, enabling you to playback DVD content that way.

Bluetooth and Wi-Fi…

On some units in this review, you will also find Bluetooth and even Wi-Fi connectivity on hand. If you have Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, you can stream wirelessly to the screen and even possibly mirror your smart device’s display as well.

This will allow you to playback pretty much whatever you want on your headrest DVD player. Models that come with Bluetooth also will enable you to connect to Bluetooth headphones as well!

Modern Car Tech

OK, back to the best headrest media players…

So, which of the Best Headrest DVD Players should you buy?

The winner of this best headrest DVD player review goes to the…

Kakawise Car Headrest Video Player with Android 9.0

Even though the Kakawise video player doesn’t have a physical DVD drive, we found it to be by far the most useful. Thanks to its ability to playback media content from USB and SD cards as well as connect to media streaming providers, you won’t have any problem finding something to watch.

You can also plug into the player via the HDMI or mirror your device wirelessly to the video player as well. This leaves you able even to play games on this video player!

No matter if you are watching a movie, Netflix, or playing a game, the picture quality is outstanding. The IPS display provides excellent viewing angles, and the touchscreen interface is extremely easy to use.

Happy viewing on your drives!
