Top 9 Best Gas Cans Of 2022 Review

There are times when we do need to store gas. It’s not really an ideal situation, but there may be no other option. In that case, it is imperative to search out the best gas cans.

To start, you mostly have two options, plastic or metal, and they both have pros and cons. Plastic cans won’t rust and end up possibly leaking all over the place, which is a situation you really don’t want. But, if there happens to be a fire, the plastic can will probably melt. However, the metal could just explode.

If you store gas for more extended periods, then metal cans might be a better choice. But both materials, as we can see, have their own potential problems. Storing gas is always going to be a potential risk. That’s why it’s essential to consider your purpose for buying one carefully.

So, let’s go through our reviews of the best gas cans currently on the market and find the perfect one for you…

1 Justrite 5 Gallon (19L) Size – Best Anti Flashback Gas Can

Finding the right balance between being able to store enough gas and carrying it around with you can be awkward. This can measures 11¾ by 17½ inches, so it is going to fit comfortably in your car. It will hold up to five gallons, which is quite a bit of fuel to store. It does, though, make carrying it around quite heavy.

There is no doubt that this can has been made to be easy to use. The lift lever on the spout is well-designed, and whilst you are filling it, the spout is wide. It is fitted with vents that move any displaced air. This ensures that the gas can be poured safely and without risk of potential spillage.

Flame resistance…

It has a flame resistor made from stainless steel that also helps the movement of gas into the can. But perhaps more importantly, it prevents flashback ignition. This will give the contents of the can a little protection from any fire that is near, though obviously only for a short period of time.

It has a trigger with a ‘Safe-squeeze’ design. This allows you to control the flow of the gas when the can is in use. And on the subject of usage, pouring fluid from the can is straightforward and safe courtesy of a nine-inch attached hose. When not in use, the spout will tightly close automatically to prevent any leakage.

Quality steel…

Justrite’s gas can is well-made using quality steel that has been given an inflammable coating for protection. It has a sturdy design that will take impact and will not dent or get damaged easily.

The can has a lot of good points and for that reason must be considered as one of the better gas cans. Being so well made and durable with useful features makes it extremely safe. But it isn’t a particularly cheap option.

Justrite 5 Gallon (19L) Size

Our rating:4.7 out of 5 stars (4.7 / 5)

Pros

  • Very well made.
  • Durable.
  • Good safety features.
  • Easy to use.

Cons

  • Can be very heavy when full.

2 No-Spill 1450 5-Gallon Poly Gas Can (CARB Compliant) – Best Pressure Based Gas Can

This model is another five-gallon can, but this time made from a tough high density molded polyethylene.

One of the big advantages of plastic-based gas cans is that they are very lightweight. Empty, this can weighs in at less than two pounds. This gas can has a great design for use in that it uses a push-button control. It is pressure-based, and therefore you can dictate the flow of the gas or other fluid.

How? You ask?

This is easily achieved by the amount of pressure you exert with your thumb on the button. When you want to use it, push down. When you have finished, just lift off. There is a significant advantage to this system in that it reduces the risks of any leaks or spills. When used correctly, there will be no after-use cleanup required.

An added useful feature is there is a see-through piece of plastic built-in to the can. You can, therefore, immediately see exactly what is left and when you might need a refill.

Being made of plastic, it might seem to some slightly vulnerable, but this is not the case. It is made from very high quality, sturdy plastic. The plastic contains materials that will withstand heat and reduce any risk from a nearby fire.

Airtight…

We have already mentioned the mechanism for use, but this also means that the can is completely airtight. An airtight can, though, does have its downside in that if exposed to extremes of temperature, it can contract and expand.

This is not always a good thing, but it will somewhat depend on the temperature fluctuations where you live. It will have to be rather a broad range have an impact. Still, it is EPA approved.

As are most plastic-based cans, this is set at a lovely price point that makes it cheaper than the metal-based equivalent. As such, it is an attractive option.

No-Spill 1450 5-Gallon Poly Gas Can (CARB Compliant)

Our rating:4.2 out of 5 stars (4.2 / 5)

Pros

  • Lightweight.
  • Easy to use and fill.
  • Useful features to prevent spillage.

Cons

  • Tends to expand/contract with temperature changes.

3 GARAGE BOSS GB351 Press ‘N Pour Gas Can, 5 Gallon – Best Child Proof Gas Can

This gas can from Garage Boss has been designed to make it easy to store and pour your gasoline. It has a shape that the company says will make filling your mower, or whatever you need comfortable and clean. But for us, there appears to be a design downside. There seems to be an issue that might make this quite tricky.

More on this later…

It has a five-gallon capacity, which is a practical size and has some excellent safety features built-in. It has a child safety cap that will stop our little darlings from incinerating the garage. This addition will also prevent fumes from escaping, which is also a good idea. It also has a flame mitigation device, and the spout has been made to operate as a press and pour design.

There is an extension to the spout, which will allow you to control the direction of the flow of the gas when filling something. This extension spout has been given a dust cap to ensure nothing unwanted goes into the fuel.

With this control of the flow of the gas, you will also reduce the risk of spillages. The rate of fluid movement, however, is quite slow with this system, so it will take a little while to use all five gallons.

EPA compliant…

The EPA is an American governing body that handles environmental protection matters, but that will not be of any interest to anyone outside of the US.

It all looks like a decent can, so what is it about the design?

Well, for us, it only has one handle in the middle, which means you have to pick up quite a heavy can when full and aim and discharge the contents using one wrist. That does not seem a comfortable or efficient way of doing it. Perhaps two handles might have been a better idea for this shape of a gas can.

GARAGE BOSS GB351 Press 'N Pour Gas Can, 5 Gallon

Our rating:4.2 out of 5 stars (4.2 / 5)

Pros

  • Good safety features.
  • Very attractive price point.

Cons

  • Rather slow pouring.
  • Only one handle.
  • Can be awkward to use.

4 Eagle UI-50-FS Red Galvanized Steel Type I Gasoline Safety Can with Funnel – Best Leak Proof Gas Can

This is a well-made and robust can from Eagle that will hold up to five gallons. It is a reasonable size for fitting in the trunk of a car measuring 13.5 x 12.5 inches. It might be a reasonably compact size, but the rugged and strong build makes it quite heavy.

But, the round base design also makes it quite stable whenever it is stored. Because of its robust build and design, we consider it as one of the best gas cans.

The design features have considered most of the problems that face people using gas cans, and a funnel is supplied with it. This is a good idea as it’s going to allow you to direct the flow accurately and avoid spillage. It will also help with the filling of the can as well.

Spring system…

There is a closing lid on a sprung system which has a gasket made from Neoprene. Neoprene is a rubberized material that is used for gaskets and other sealing needs. This is because it is durable but flexible and resistant to oils and water, making it a perfect material for sealing a gas can.

Then, it has a comfortable trigger release for when you deliver the gas, making it easy to use but also allowing control of the flowing amount. The risk of fire when in use is reduced by the non-sparking flame arrestor, which is essential when dealing with any kind of flammable liquid.

You won’t find a tougher build…

It is made of 24-gauge galvanized steel, so there are not going to be any cans made with sturdier materials around. The design has ensured a seamless construction, so there will be no chance of any leaks either. As an added security, it has also been leak-tested to ensure that this is the case.

So, with a can that is so well-made with so many useful features, is there anything in the negative column? Only that the can is quite heavy when empty. When full, it means you don’t need the gym that day for one arm anyway. This might be a meaningless fault, though, and five gallons of gas can never be lightweight. But, add the strength of the can, and it is going to be heavy.

Safe and secure…

In our view, this is a quality can that is about as safe as you can get, set at a price point that is very reasonable.

Eagle UI-50-FS Red Galvanized Steel Type I Gasoline Safety Can with Funnel

Our rating:4.7 out of 5 stars (4.7 / 5)

Pros

  • Leakproof.
  • Tough, durable build.
  • Easy to use.
  • Good safety additions.
  • Fair price.

Cons

  • Rather heavy.

5 TERAPUMP 3rd Gen – Best No Spill Gas Can Accessory

This is an interesting gas can in that it isn’t a gas can at all. However, it makes life a little easier by filling other cans and vehicles quickly and easily acting as a pump. It certainly means you may not have to lift any heavy gas cans full of petrol and it reduces the chances of spillages.

Compact…

It is quite a compact can that is capable of automatically pumping nearly two and a half gallons of fuel per minute. You can transfer the contents of your chosen can to other cans, vehicles, or boats, but it will also service smaller items like lawnmowers. It is quite lightweight at just over one pound in weight.

It should be mentioned here to avoid any confusion that this is just a pump, and the purchase does not include a gas can. The idea is that it will pump from your can into its intended destination.

With that in mind…

For protection against the weather, while being operated, it is given a water-resistant cover, and it also helps with accidental spills. It is fitted with a flexible hose that has a no-spill automatic stop feature.

To operate, it requires four AA batteries, but these are not included. However, there are three different sized adapters included. This will ensure that it will fit most US and Canadian types of cans.

Please note, though, that it only fits plastic cans. It also will not fit FMD cans. It is certified for use in the US and Canada under UL standards.

A few other quibbles…

Users should also be aware that any product that uses batteries for power will perform at their best when the cells are new. As they wear down, performance will naturally be affected.

Performance can also be reduced by weather conditions, especially in the cold. It is ideally suited for petrol and other flammable liquids but not heavy oil or water.

It is an exciting idea, though we can see some potential problems with operation. The price point also makes it a little expensive as it doesn’t actually include any size of the can.

TERAPUMP 3rd Gen

Our rating:4.3 out of 5 stars (4.3 / 5)

Pros

  • An interesting idea.
  • Saves having to fill yourself.
  • 2.4-gallon transfer per minute.

Cons

  • Batteries are not included.

6 Eagle UI-50-SY Type I Metal Safety Can, Diesel – Best Value for the Money Gas Can

Back to Eagle for another gas can. This product is marked for Diesel, but of course, it can be used for other flammable liquids. The idea may be that, as some people store diesel oil, then having a dedicated storage can is a good idea. And then make it a different color so that it is instantly recognizable from the usual gas cans.

If you are going to store anything other than diesel oil in this can, it is probably a good idea to label the can with whatever is inside.

FM approved…

It has a capacity for five gallons and a single spout for both pouring and for filling. The can is suitable for storage, for transportation of flammable liquids, and of course, for dispensing them. It is FM approved, and it complies with the standards set by the OHSA.

The can is made from a heavy-duty galvanized steel, and having such a stable build quality makes it resistant to some chemicals and rust. It will also take a few knocks without incurring dents. The finish has a powder coating that reduces the risks of scratching, chipping, or other superficial surface damage.

Features…

The cap on the spout is one-inch diameter and self-closes, which will ensure there are no leaks or any accidental spillage. To release any vapors, the cap assembly can be opened, and it also has a flame arrestor. This will stop whatever is stored in the can from igniting, and it will also, in the case of a fire, stop the flames from spreading.

It weighs six and a half pounds in an empty state, which means, of course, it is going to be quite heavy when it is full.

When we have looked at Eagle products before they have been well-made and suitable for their purpose. This appears to be another such gas can, set at a reasonable price point, making it good value for money.

Eagle UI-50-SY Type I Metal Safety Can, Diesel

Our rating:4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5)

Pros

  • Very well-made.
  • Galvanized steel.
  • Good features for protection.
  • Decent price point.

Cons

  • Will be heavy to carry around.

7 Midwest Can 8600 Diesel Can – 5 Gallon Capacity – Best Gas Can for Storage

This is a five-gallon gas can from Midwest with some very good points but also a couple that might be considered not so good.

One of the design issues it may have for some people is its size. It measures 24 by 21 by 10 inches, which is quite large for a gas can. This may cause storage problems for owners of smaller cars if you want to carry it around. However, there is also a positive to the size in that for home or garage storage; it is a decent size.

Two handles, now that’s clever…

This can has a useful design feature that some other manufacturers could learn from. Five gallons of fuel can be quite heavy, and when you are filling something, it will take some effort. The great feature about this can is that it has two handles, one on the top and one on the back. These make it very easy to use but also to carry if you happen to be just moving it.

Another good design plus with this can is that it has a base level that is given a bit of extra width. This reduces the risk of it being accidentally knocked over.

So, some useful design features, but we did mention a couple of things that were not so good. We have already mentioned the size and the storage problems this may cause, but the second is the spout and nozzle.

What’s the big deal?

Whereas the size isn’t a risk, a poorly functioning nozzle and spout could be a problem. Holding the can upright and operating the spout at the same time is awkward, to say the least, and you need to be careful that the spout doesn’t leak.

But one more design positive is that if it is knocked over, it will seal itself to prevent spillage, and that is an excellent safety feature.

HDPE…

Midwest’s gas can is made from plastic, but it is a sturdy HDPE material that is very strong. Regular usage is not going to be a problem, providing you are aware of the potential issues with a leaky spout.

It is easy to handle and carry and, apart from the spout, a good design. It is set at a decent price point, so it will be an attractive option for some.

Midwest Can 8600 Diesel Can - 5 Gallon Capacity

Our rating:4.4 out of 5 stars (4.4 / 5)

Pros

  • Good quality build.
  • Two handles.
  • Wider base.
  • Good price point.

Cons

  • Potentially leaky spout.

8 Surecan 5 Gallon 19 Liter Self Venting Diesel Fuel Can – Best Fully Featured Gas Can

Her is another gas can that is built to hold five gallons of fuel. This can, though has a little bit of an advantage over some of its competitors. It might only be a minor detail to some, but this can is a bit smaller than most.

At 15.61 x 10.24 x 15.27 inches, it is compact and easy to hold. This also means that it is going to be easy to carry around in smaller vehicles. This, along with some other excellent design features, makes it one of the most versatile gas cans you can buy.

Great features include…

It is effortless to use with a long and flexible nozzle that has its plus points. One is that you can place the nozzle in the tank of the vehicle or other object while you hold it in the air. Then it is just a matter of pressing a lever, and the gas will then flow out the can.

As the can has a built-in self-venting system, it means that the flow of the gas is also going to be smooth. It also has a handle as well as a carrying grip underneath, making it easy to move around with two hands.

It has some excellent safety features, one of which is the cap, which is child-proof, a very good and necessary idea. However, this does make removing the lid a little tricky.

Plastic build…

It is made of plastic, but a very tough and durable plastic, so there are no concerns about durability or safety in that area. To add to the impressive design features, it is built to be spill-proof, which means no mess to clear up after you have discharged the contents. It will also rid you of that eternal problem of getting the last drop out without spilling it.

We have all been there for that one…

Being also airtight, it will not allow any other external unwanted materials to enter the can. It’s quite expensive for a plastic can, tough as it is, but we think an excellent buy.

Surecan 5 Gallon 19 Liter Self Venting Diesel Fuel Can

Our rating:4.8 out of 5 stars (4.8 / 5)

Pros

  • Good quality build.
  • Very strong.
  • Excellent safety and operating features.

Cons

  • The child-proof feature can make it awkward to fill.

9 VP Racing Fuels Motorsport 5 Gallon Square Plastic Utility Jug – Best Easy to Use Gas Can

A utility jug might be the best way of describing this can, as that is precisely what it looks like. It is a compact gas can measuring 10.2 by 10.3 by 21.3 inches, so it is easily stored and an ideal size for the trunk of even the smallest car.

It is just about one of the easiest to use gas cans you will find. The can is filled using the same spout from which the fuel is dispensed. Then, to make it easier and smoother to use, there is a vent with a cap near the spout. It doesn’t have a filler hose or nozzle, and if you want either of those, that is an extra purchase.

One warning…

The handle on the can is up towards the top, which to us, is not ideal. The weight when pouring will be low, and therefore you will need more effort to lift it up. It might also cause a rush of fuel in the worst-case scenario and over pour.

You also will need to be careful that when the can is full, that gas does not leak through the vent we mentioned. This can happen even when it is screwed tightly shut.

No spillage…

It is a plastic can made from high quality and tough polyethylene that is made to be able to handle most types of wear and tear. It is therefore very suitable for gas cans. The cap has a rubber gasket that is there to eliminate any leaks and potential spillage too.

A reasonable price point makes this a gas can that some might see as an excellent alternative to more standard designs.

VP Racing Fuels Motorsport 5 Gallon Square Plastic Utility Jug

Our rating:4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5)

Pros

  • Strong build.
  • Reasonable price point.
  • Easy to carry around.

Cons

  • Some spillage issues when using from full.

Best Gas Cans Buyers Guide

Best Gas Cans Review

Getting the Best Gas Can for You

The first question to ask yourself will certainly be the big talking point. Which material would you choose?

Plastic or Metal?

Both have advantages and disadvantages. Plastic cans will probably be cheaper, and they do not weigh as much as their metal cousins. The plastics they use are durable and quite strong enough to last you a long time, providing they are not subject to unnecessarily rough treatment.

Metal then is more expensive, but they have a high resistance level to solvents and are very strong. But, they are much heavier, and when it is full of gas, it is going to weigh more than some people will be able to manage comfortably. And, if there is one thing you need when using it, that will be a steady hand and arm.

Size

How many gallons do you need to store? The cans we have looked at tend to be around five gallons. Suppose you want something to just keep in the car in case of emergencies, then the smaller, the better.

If you are using it to fill multiple vehicles or other gas propelled objects, maybe you’ll want a little more. Five gallons is a good middle of the road number that suits most requirements.

Easy to Use

This is an important aspect. You will want it to be easy to operate. This will vary by user and what one thinks is natural, another will not. A good way of deciding is to take a look at the nozzle or spout. Is that going to be right for you? Some offer little else other than a spout; some have flexible nozzles.

Safety

Important? Just a little bit. You do need to be serious about this aspect. Having flammable liquids around can be very dangerous if they are not stored safely. Most will have seals, and some will have anti-spill devices and designs.

These are important, and so is the flame arrestor feature some have. This stops any naked flame from entering the can. If it did, it could be interesting, so that is a feature that is well worth looking for.
