Top 6 Best Garage Floor Mats for all Budgets in 2022 Reviews
1 Shield Family Floor Protector – Premium Absorbent Oil Mat – Best Premium Garage Floor Mat
The Shield Family Floor Protector has an impermeable membrane that will keep the stains in the mat and off your floor. It has a multi-layer construction and will keep every kind of dirt and grime on and inside of the mat.
Battery acid spill? No problem…
This mat can hold even tricky to clean fluids like oils, brake fluids, battery acid, and coolants. We’re sure you’ll agree that’s a huge positive for any garage floor mat. More everyday dirt, it can handle easily.
Fluids are trapped inside the high-tech multi-woven microfiber layers. The layers are highly adsorbent as they have a large surface area. Once fluids fall onto the mat, they sink to the lowest level and are retained there. They cannot leak through the final layer and onto your floor.
The fluids stay there until you wash them out. This is thankfully an easy process. You could opt to hand wash them with a brush and mild detergent before rinsing. However, they can be cleaned and hosed down using a pressure washer to save a lot of time and effort.
For routine cleaning, just to take off regular dirt, you can use a vacuum in the same way as you would on your household carpet. This makes cleaning straightforward and super easy.
Where can you use this?
The floor mats can be used under cars, SUVs, ATVs, golf carts, and any kind of vehicle. They can also be used under your garbage cans and any of your garden tools and appliances.
The mat measures 25.2” x 13.9” x 2.5”. These mats can be easily joined together to cover a larger area. Plus, they’re not difficult to cut to size with just standard scissors. Another big plus to finish on.
- Highly absorbent.
- Impermeable lower layer.
- Can be cleaned with a pressure washer.
- Easy to cut to size.
- Slippery under the surface.
2 KALASONEER Oil Spill Mat, Absorbent Oil Mat Reusable Washable – Best Affordable Garage Floor Mat
This is a large-sized mat that offers excellent value for money. It measures 36 inches x 60 inches. However, if this is a little too large for your needs, they make two smaller sizes. The smallest is 36 inches x 36 inches.
If you need a smaller size still, the good news is that they can also be easily be cut to size. A sharp pair of scissors or a carpet knife will do the job.
The mat has a felt fabric upper layer. This does a great job of absorbing liquids. It will retain all the kinds of fluids that are likely to be used in a garage, such as oil, brake fluid, and coolant.
The lowest layer has a waterproof backing, so any dirt, grime, or fluid cannot penetrate your garage floor. What’s more, the lower layer also has an adhesive quality, so it won’t slip around and will stay put once it’s in position.
Washing the mat couldn’t be easier, and you can wash it in just about any way you choose. This includes using a pressure hose, pressure washer, or you can even put it in the washing machine. However, we’d advise you to think carefully before placing anything saturated in oil or car fluids into a domestic washing machine. That’s if you’re married and you fancy staying that way!
The mat is durable and will survive plenty of washes. However, the felt does tend to quickly bobble and will look a little scruffy after only a few washes. Not a deal-breaker but also not a good look.
Could be thicker…
Another criticism is that it’s very thin and flimsy. This is OK if it’s in a protected area and away from the wind. However, if it isn’t, it’s liable to literally blow away. Generally, it’s less of an issue in your garage, though it’s a relatively big problem if you intend to use it on your driveway.
- Multiple sizes.
- Easy to clean.
- Liable to blow away if it’s windy.
- Felt surface can look scruffy after several uses.
3 EZGO Garage Floor Car Parking Mat – Best Garage Floor Mat for Large Area
This is a large-sized mat. It measures a generous five feet by eight and a half feet. This makes this product one of the best garage floor mats if you have a large area to cover. There’s no doubt that the EZGO floor mat offers plenty of value.
So, is it any good?
Positives are that it’s absorbent, and Polyfibers in the mat can retain a large amount of fluid, despite the thin layer. Additionally, it has a Polyfilm backing that should keep any liquids, such as battery acid, in the mat and off your garage floor.
It does a good job in this respect, though some customers have complaints that the mat was burnt through with battery acid and penetrated the floor. Whilst we don’t doubt this happened, it could easily have been because a substantial volume of acid had leaked onto the mat.
Frankly, where battery acid is concerned, you need more than a mat…
The mat is big enough to place under your car, SUV, or truck. If you need to cut or shape it, you only need a sharp knife or scissors.
The underside of the mat has a non-slip surface. This is effective to a point, though the underside of the mat is still liable to move around to some extent. Because it’s large and thin, it’s undoubtedly prone to wrinkling and moving underfoot.
Weigh it down…
Even worse, if your garage is not protected from the wind, the mat will lift. The only way to prevent this is to place a heavy object on each corner. Not a great solution by any means.
- Good value.
- It covers a large area.
- Polyfilm backing.
- Absorbent Polyfiber construction.
- Thin and flimsy.
- Reports of battery acid penetrating the lower layer.
4 Guardian – MLL14030500 Clean Step Scraper Outdoor Floor Mat – Best Rubber Garage Floor Mat
This is an all-rubber mat. It measures a good three feet by five feet and weighs a reassuringly heavy 16 pounds. If you need something larger, they have another two sizes going up to a maximum of four feet by six feet.
One of the great features is its non-slip properties. Once you put this down, it’s going nowhere. The textured layer on the bottom of the matt prevents it from moving. Plus, its weight guarantees that nothing short of a hurricane is ever going to disturb the Guardian Floor Mat.
Another strength is its ability to be used aggressively to wipe your feet and trap dirt and particles that would otherwise end up on the floor. It’s a great first level of protection for any garage or entrance.
OK, but what about cleaning it?
Cleaning is also easy. This is because the natural rubber material means that all you have to do is wash it down using a hose or power washer. Anything that cuts down on cleaning time is a massive plus in our books.
Where the Guardian mat is not so good is in absorbing fluids. It’s not designed to be placed under your vehicle as it cannot absorb corrosive liquids. Any contact with battery acid or brake fluid will melt straight through it. The Guardian mat is definitely for the entrance areas only.
Please note that unlike the other mats in our review, they cannot be cut to size.
- Good for scraping and cleaning shoes.
- It will not slip or move.
- Easy to clean.
- It cannot absorb fluids.
5 Hanjet Garage Car Mat Containment Floor Mat for Snow, Mud, Rain – Best Extra Large Garage Floor Mat
If you’re looking for a big mat for your garage floor, then look no further. The Hanjet Garage Car Mat is the biggest in our review and one of the top garage floor mats you can buy where size is the critical consideration.
At 8’6’ x 20’, they don’t get much bigger than this.
What’s it made of?
The mat is made from high-grade commercial woven PVC. It’s designed to be water-tight and to be highly durable.
The primary purpose of the Hanjet mat is to keep rain, mud, snow, and rain off the surface of your garage floor. The mat should therefore be installed so you can drive straight onto it from outside. That way, the dirt, and grime will be left on the mat and not the garage floor.
The mat does not move or slip around when you drive on to it. This is also the case when you walk on it. Plus, it doesn’t blow around in the wind unless there’s an absolute gale blowing.
So, what doesn’t it do?
It cannot absorb fluids, so it should be kept away from things like battery acid and oil or any corrosive fluids. If it does come in contact with corrosives, it’s likely to burn a hole straight through and onto your garage floor.
Another potential issue to be very aware of is that if you live in a cold area and you drive into your garage with snow or water on your vehicle, be careful if this freezes overnight. This is because if it freezes around the wheels, it could cause the mat the tear when you drive off.
- Large size.
- Keeps snow, dirt, and water off the floor.
- Non-slip surface.
- Easy to clean.
- Cannot absorb corrosive fluids.
- Liable to tear if wheels are frozen.
6 New Pig Corporation-PM50443 Heavy Duty Pig Mat for Garage – Best Small Heavy Duty Garage Floor Mat
This is the smallest mat on our list, but it’s also easily the thickest and the most absorbent. If you are working in small areas where there are likely to be big fluid spillages, this is the right choice.
The pad measures just 16” x 20,” but you do get two mats in the pack. If you need more, you can get a package containing 50 pads, and you can even get a 50’ roll. Either of these two options will afford a considerable cost saving.
The pad is made up of a series of eight layers. These layers are highly absorbent and able to quickly wick away fluid within the mat to prevent any leakage onto the floor. The composition of the New Pig mat makes it highly durable, strong, and resistant to tears and wear caused by corrosive fluid spillage.
Like a premium nappy, this one…
One of its top strengths is that it also absorbs fluids so quickly that you can pick up the mat within seconds of a spill, and the fluid won’t then pour out onto the floor.
There’s no doubt that this is the most absorbent and corrosion-resistant mat on our list. If you only need to cover a small area of your garage floor, either to work in a specific part or to place it in a particular spot under your car, this is hard to beat.
Practical and versatile…
As if all of this wasn’t good enough, the mat is also made up of 90% recycled fibers, keeping the polar bears happy. Plus, it can stand up to multiple washes, so it’s economical to use too.
- Eight thick layers.
- Highly absorbent.
- Can handle very corrosive fluids.
- Made from 90% recyclable fibers.
- It only covers a relatively small area.
Best Garage Floor Mats Buying Guide
If you are using the mat to place under your car or vehicle and expect some level of fluid spillage, then absorbency will be critical. High levels of absorbency will keep the oil, coolants, battery acid, and other fluids off the floor.
As well as being absorbent, the ideal garage floor mats also need a separate layer closest to the floor to keep all the retained fluids within the mat.
So if absorbency is vital for you…
The top floor mat for its level of absorbency is undoubtedly the New Pig Corporation-PM50443 Heavy Duty Pig Mat. However, the Shield Family Floor Protector is worthy of an honorable mention, too.
Resistance to Corrosive Fluids
Some of the floor mats on our list have no resistance to corrosive fluids whatsoever. And this is fine. Mats like the Hanjet Garage Car Mat and the Guardian Clean Step Scraper Outdoor Floor Mat are not designed for soaking up corrosive fluids. They are there to protect your garage against outside dirt, water, and snow.
For the remaining mats in our review, the ability to stand up to harsh chemical fluids is essential. Most do this reasonably well. However, The New Pig Corporation-PM50443 Heavy Duty Pig Mat is again a clear winner. It has eight layers and deals with corrosive fluids brilliantly. What it lacks in size, this mat certainly makes up for in strength.
Durability and Ease of Cleaning
Garage mats will require regular cleaning, so the ability to withstand frequent washing and the time spent on the cleaning process is essential. None of us wants to spend an unreasonable amount of time cleaning a gunk-filled garage mat.
Happily, all of the mats can be either hosed down or cleaned with a pressure washer. This saves a decent amount of time over having to wash by hand. Some can also be put into a washing machine, like the KALASONEER Oil Spill Mat, though it’s not something we’d recommend.
Overall, the Guardian Clean Step Scraper Outdoor Floor Mat is by far the easiest to clean.
For those of you that need to cover a large area of your garage, the two best mats are the Hanjet Garage Car Mat and the EZGO Garage Floor Car Parking Mat. Both of these cover a large area well and will enable you to cover either all or a large area of your vehicle.
Non-Slip Properties and Stability
Mats like the Hanjet Garage Car Mat, the KALASONEER Oil Spill Mat, and the Guardian Clean Step Scraper Outdoor Floor Mat have non-slip properties that keep them where they are meant to be. Having a mat moving around, especially if it’s soaked with car fluids, is not a good thing.
Another important property is that it should stay planted to the ground on a windy day. Unfortunately, some of the larger, thinner mats struggle in the wind and, frankly, are liable to blow away. If you stay in a windy area, we would advise against getting a thin mat.
