So, we need an awesome helmet. Here, we’ve checked out some of the best dirt bike helmets available. Why not take a look, and find the perfect choice for your next Grand Prix.

Top 10 Best Dirt Bike Helmets On The Market Reviews

1 Shoei VFX-EVO Helmet – Blazon (X-Large) (RED/Black) – Best Ventilated Dirt Bike Helmet

First on our list of the best dirt bike helmets is this red and black option from Shoei. Since 1958, this well-respected Japanese brand has been at the forefront of motorcycle helmet production. Can this model live up to its sterling reputation?

It sure can! Lightweight yet strong, this helmet is a game-changer for dirt bike enthusiasts. Let’s find out why?

Advanced design equals superb support…

With Shoei’s advanced integrated matrix plus technology, we get a shell that offers maximum protection. It’s sturdy enough to withstand falls at any speed, and from any height. We’re sure we’d feel confident wearing this out on the track.

The shape offers outstanding support. Thanks to expanded ribbing, we get a snug yet comfortable fit. And for those who wear dirt bike goggles, we also find a space to hold the strap. This ensures they won’t slip around.

That shape is aerodynamic too. We don’t want our lid to hinder our speed, do we? Thanks to rigorous air tunnel and rider testing, Shoei provides us with a sleek, sturdy piece of kit.

Ventilation, galore…

But the ventilation system is where this helmet starts to shine. After all, we know how demanding dirt biking can be. It’s a seriously hot and sweaty business.

Boasting a massive 16 air vents, we get a constant flow of air. A front intake plus two huge exhausts ensure we won’t overheat. They provide the rider with a comfortable experience, something we don’t always get when out riding.

That all sounds great. But it has to be expensive, right?

Only a little. As dirt bike helmets go, it’s pricey but doesn’t completely break the bank. So no, this one isn’t the cheapest option around. But with this much quality, maybe we get what we pay for.

Shoei VFX-EVO Helmet - Blazon

Our rating:4.8 out of 5 stars (4.8 / 5)

  • Amazing ventilation system.
  • Great protection.
  • Trusted brand.

  • Slightly costlier than some other brands.

2 Arai VX-Pro4 Helmet – Solid (Medium) (White) – Best Basic Dirt Bike Helmet

In plain white, and without any fancy design features, our next helmet may look basic. But don’t be fooled. This is an impressive bit of gear.

Arai’s IO, or Immediate Oval fit, offers a cozy nest for the rider’s head. Providing comfort and security, we feel safe in the knowledge that this helmet won’t move around. A close fit is imperative for any motorcycle helmet, and we certainly get that here.

The interior of this lid is constructed from expanded polystyrene foam. It stiffens upon impact, safeguarding us when we hit the dirt. As a bonus, it’s waterproof too, keeping moisture out when flying round a muddy track.

So far, so good. But what about the exterior?

Super fiber steps up to the plate here. This is seriously tough stuff! It has a 30% higher tensile strength than other materials commonly used in helmet construction. And increased penetration resistance means we’ll never need to worry about head protection again!

Expensive, but worth it?

This helmet sounds awesome! Are there any downsides? Unfortunately, yes. It is quite expensive. That super fiber can cost up to six times more than normal fiberglass. Yes, it’s awesome, but it comes at a cost.

And everyone wants to look cool when they’re riding, right? No, budding Cooper Webb wants to look dull. And as we mentioned earlier, this is a basic design. While it has some fantastic qualities, it is a little boring to look at.

Arai VX-Pro4 Helmet - Solid

Our rating:4.2 out of 5 stars (4.2 / 5)

  • Amazing construction.
  • Expanded polystyrene interior.
  • Snug fit.

  • Quite expensive.
  • Uninspiring design.

3 Bell Moto-9 Flex Dirt Helmet (Fasthouse WRWF Matte/Gloss Black/White/Red – Small) – Best Carbon Composite Dirt Bike Helmet

At just 4.8 pounds, the next item on our list is lightweight. That carbon composite shell may be tough, but it sure doesn’t weigh much.

Here we have a helmet from Bell. Widely-known and well-respected, Bell helmets have been the watchword in motorcycle gear for more than 50 years. Could this be the best dirt bike helmet out there?

Multi-layer liner for extra protection…

This helmet offers us a three-layer impact liner. Its various material densities offer protection against a range of different impact strengths. It’s an uncommon feature, but one that we think is pretty great.

Firstly, we get an EPO layer. This helmet is a foamed polystyrene polyethylene mix. In low impact falls at slow speeds, this material takes the force. Next, we have EPP, polypropylene plastic, foaming material. This is for mid-range speed and impact. It provides excellent energy absorption, as well as a good recovery rate after a fall.

Then there’s a layer of EPS, a treated polystyrene material. During high-speed crashes, it provides ultimate protection. Together, these three layers are an almost unstoppable force!

So, we get a massive amount of protection! But is it comfortable?

Inside, a flexible liner offers any head shape a cozy fit. It also allows the superior ventilation system to provide a constant flow of air. Magnetic cheek pads feature an emergency removal system for maximum comfort and convenience.

OK, it’s not a cheap option. But with all this quality, plus a five-year warranty, we think it’s worth it. So, who knows, maybe this could be one of the best motorcycle dirt bike helmets around.

Bell Moto-9 Flex Dirt Helmet

Our rating:5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

  • Multi-layer protection.
  • Emergency padding removal.
  • Top-shelf ventilation.

  • Not a budget-friendly item.

4 6D ATR-2 Helo Helmet-Orange/Grey-L – Best Lightweight Dirt Bike Helmet

In sharply contrasting orange and black colors, our next helmet is sure to attract attention. Here we have a striking product that is bound to draw admiring glances from other riders.

At a tiny 3.26 pounds, this product won’t weigh the rider down. It retains the tough outer structure we need, without carrying too much heft. It allows for full freedom of movement, with no restrictions.

As we all know, dirt biking is an extremely taxing sport. It’s hot stuff. Is this helmet breathable?

Absolutely. The air gap ventilation system sees to that. It helps us stay cool, whatever the weather and regardless of the difficulty of the track.

On the inside, we find a washable Dri-lex liner. Let’s face it: damp, smelly, helmet pads are no joke! This liner is easily removed for convenient cleaning. Plus, the cheek pads come with an emergency release system for speedy removal.

But does it offer much protection?

Of course. We have our old friend, that trusty EPP, to thank here. Sturdy yet flexible, it’s the ultimate way to safeguard our head from harm.

So, it’s light, it’s tough, and it’s well ventilated. Anything else? There sure is. This product comes with a three-year warranty. If it becomes damaged, 6D helmets will be more than happy to replace it. As we mentioned earlier, it looks awesome. Those bold colors work well together. This is a helmet that makes even amateur riders look badass.

6D ATR-2 Helo Helmet

Our rating:4.2 out of 5 stars (4.2 / 5)

  • Fantastic color scheme.
  • Extremely light.
  • Good ventilation.

  • At the higher end of the price scale.

5 Alpinestars Supertech M10 Dyno Helmet-Silver/Black/Carbon/Gold-XL – Most Comfortable Dirt Bike Helmet

Everyone knows Alpine Stars, right? Almost every biker at some point has owned an Alpine Stars product. For years, they have been one of the leading names in protective motorcycle gear.

There’s a lot to like here. That carbon outer shell is just fantastic. Elegantly shaped yet strong and sturdy; it gives us the ultimate in both protection and stunning good looks.

Super well-ventilated, and padded…

This helmet offers the ultimate ventilation too. We get a whopping 19 intake vents, plus five exhausts. There’s no chance of running the risk of overheating with this lid.

Once again, we find EPP foam backing up the outer shell. However, this time the foam is positioned a little differently. Supported by the shape of the side shell, it’ll help defend the rider’s collar bone, hopefully preventing bone breakages.

At 5.4 points, it ranks heavier than others on this list.

Does that make it less comfortable?

Not at all! It’s crazy how much comfort this helmet offers, and 3D-contoured foam sees to that. It fits closely around our head, cradling it safely. And for even more comfort, it comes with an A-head system. This is a nifty little feature that is unusual to find, but it’s a welcome addition.

It also has an adjustable top pad, allowing the wearer to change it for the perfect fit. Plus, its inner liner is removable and washable. And it’s made from anti-moisture fabric. We can make sure our helmet is clean and dry, even after a long day out on the dirt.

Alpinestars Supertech M10 Dyno Helmet

Our rating:5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

  • Amazing ventilation.
  • Beautiful design.
  • Collar bone protection.

  • Heavier than others on this list.
  • Wallet-punishing expensive.

6 Fly Racing 2022 Formula Carbon Helmet – Vector (Large) (Orange/Grey/Black) – Most Aerodynamic Dirt Bike Helmet

Up next, another seriously bold helmet. Its dramatic orange, black, and gray hues are sure to turn heads.

For this helmet, FLY racing has developed an AIS, or adaptive impact system.

What does this mean?

Don’t worry; it’s not as complicated as it sounds. They’ve incorporated a variety of different design elements and materials to create one of the strongest head shields around. A 12k carbon fiber shell is supported by viscoelastic materials for an unyielding, impenetrable lid.

The interior features EPP. But it also includes EPS, strategically placed in different parts of the helmet. This placement means that the spots most likely to be hit are well-defended, without being bogged down by too much extra insulation.

How about sizing?

We can’t deny that this was a very tight fit. Some may think it’s too tight. Be warned, though; we wouldn’t recommend moving up a size unless you’re sure. The helmet will likely relax after a few wears, and you don’t want to be left with a helmet that’s too big.

We really can’t say enough about how this helmet looks. To put things bluntly, it’s stunning. Not only the colors but that aerodynamic shape with its smooth, sleek lines give it a real touch of class.

Could well be the Best Value for the Money Dirt Bike on the market…

Although costly, it’s not the priciest one we’ve seen. We think here we get pretty decent bang for our buck.

Fly Racing 2022 Formula Carbon Helmet

Our rating:5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

  • Adaptive impact system.
  • Combined interior materials.
  • Gorgeous look.

  • Very close fit.

7 Fox Racing Durven Men’s V3 Off-Road Motorcycle Helmet – Multi/Small – Best Budget Dirt Bike Helmet

After so many costly helmets, it’s time for a budget-friendly option! But does it trade effectiveness for the price?

Using multi-composite technology, this shell is constructed from blended materials. Carbon fiber and FRP resins join forces to provide a tough, solid, outer layer. And these materials are lightweight, so this helmet won’t slow us down.

Inside, we get an EPS lining. For high speeds crashes, EPS is awesome. It dissipates the impact of the fall, spreading the force out, so it causes less damage.

Impact-absorbing fluid inside?

Why? Well, much like that EPS, the fluid helps dissipate the impact. The energy generated by a bad landing can cause major damage to the brain. This fluid assists by directing that energy in other ways, providing another form of protection.

Thanks to mesh vents, we get a decent amount of airflow. It’ll keep us cool and help any moisture to dry. Thanks to antimicrobial cheek pads, and a washable liner, any dampness that does sneak in won’t be too much of a problem.

Not the best looking, but…

It isn’t the most beautiful helmet we’ve looked at. That construction just doesn’t have the same finish as others we’ve seen. Plus, the colors are a bit basic and old-fashioned. But at this price, do we care?

This is a fantastic helmet. It offers a high level of protection at a pocketbook-friendly price.

Fox Racing Durven Men's V3 Off-Road Motorcycle Helmet

Our rating:5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

  • Top-notch interior protection.
  • Great price.
  • Removable and washable lining.

  • Uninspiring colors and finish.

8 Troy Lee Designs 2022 SE4 Carbon Helmet with MIPS – Flash Team Edition (Medium) (Blue/RED) – Best Carbon Fiber Dirt Bike Helmet

Our next helmet incorporates up-to-the-minute MIPS technology.

Sounds impressive, right? But what does this mean?

MIPS is a brain protection system. It takes care of the rotational motion transferred to the brain during a fall. It lets the rider’s head move 10 to 15mm, relative to the movement of the helmet. Which is awesome. Having that extra degree of safety gives real peace of mind. It’s a welcome addition to an already pretty great helmet.

MIPS aside, we get our old reliable EPS inner material. As mentioned elsewhere in this review, expanded polystyrene is a fantastic choice. We just loved having that new technology supported by something tried and true.

How about the exterior and the ventilation?

Carbon fiber comes into play here. It’s robust enough to take a hit of any force. In eye-catching red, black, and white, with a subtle blue trim, it’s sure to turn heads on the trails. And the ventilation is just incredible. It has a colossal 20 intake ports. Combined with 12 exhaust points, airflow will never be a problem.

So what’s the catch? It’s not easy to find one. We could say that it’s slightly heavier than some. But at 4.8 pounds, it doesn’t weigh that much. But wow! We pay for that MIPS technology. This is one for those with cash to flash.

Troy Lee Designs 2022 SE4 Carbon Helmet with MIPS

Our rating:4.2 out of 5 stars (4.2 / 5)

  • Offers superior protection.
  • A-1 ventilation.
  • Appealing visuals.

  • Lavish price.
  • Slightly on the heavy side.

9 Leatt GPX 6.5 Carbon V19.1 Helmet-XS – Best Protection Dirt Bike Helmet

Designed to minimize the potential for brain damage, our penultimate lid is equipped with 360° turbine technology. A turbine in a helmet? How does it work?

These turbines are constructed from a material that hardens on impact called Armourgel. Similar to MIPS, the idea behind them is to lower rotational acceleration. But unlike MIPS, they do so by bending around the skull.

Pretty nifty, isn’t it? We think this is an awesome idea. It can reduce up to 30% of head impact and a huge 40% of rotational acceleration!

G-force reduction…

V-shaped impact foam is molded into the shell. This multi-density material works hard. It delivers G-force reduction, protecting the brain.

Weighing 4.84 pounds, this helmet is on the small side. This does matter because lower volume means lower rotational acceleration. This, along with a breakaway visor, offers a much higher level of safety than many cheaper options.

Speaking of cost, we thought this would be a pricey choice. But we were pleasantly surprised. It’s very reasonable, especially when we consider the superb quality being offered.

So, we know it’s safe. Does it come with any extra features?

How about hydration capabilities? Though the rehydration kit is sold separately, this helmet is fully hydration ready. We can stay refreshed without removing our gear. And it has decent ventilation. Even when riding at slow speeds, we get a continuous flow of air. It’s the perfect way to stay cool on a tough day of riding.

OK, this isn’t the prettiest helmet we’ve ever seen. But with features like this, do we really care?

Leatt GPX 6.5 Carbon V19.1 Helmet-XS

Our rating:4.6 out of 5 stars (4.6 / 5)

  • Reduces rotational acceleration.
  • Lowered volume carbon shell.
  • Washable, anti-odor inner liner.

  • Boring looks.

10 KLIM F5 Helmet ECE LG Jet Klim Yellow – Best Premium Dirt Bike Helmet

Now for the last, but not the least, item on our list. Compatible with a neck brace, this helmet protects us with a carbon fiber shell. And that shell has a sizable eye-port! Dirt biking is a dusty, muddy sport, so anything that improves our vision is a real boon.

Boasting eight exhausts and 18 intakes, it’s an airy option. There are few things worse than overheating while riding a heavy CRF. The helmet lets us remain cool, even under fatiguing circumstances.

As well as keeping us cool, we can stay dry too. How?

We have the inner liner to thank for this. Its moisture-wicking capabilities quickly draw sweat from the face, while also drying while you are in motion. Not only that, it’s antibacterial, so there’s no need to worry about strong odors.

Unusually, this product includes a magnetic Fidlock strap. This is a really useful addition. Instead of fiddling with a buckle while wearing gloves, we can remove the helmet with just one simple movement.

There’s so much to love here! What’s the best part?

It is insanely light. It doesn’t weigh much over three pounds. We get maximum comfort, plus it won’t restrict our movement or speed.

Is there a downside? Of course! As could be expected, it’s the price. A great-fitting, lightweight helmet such is this sure to be on the pricey side. But we love it anyway. It’s safe, it’s comfortable, and it looks awesome. What’s not to like?

KLIM F5 Helmet ECE LG Jet Klim Yellow

Our rating:4.8 out of 5 stars (4.8 / 5)

  • Convenient-to-operate buckle.
  • Incredibly low weight.
  • Massive eye-port.

  • Extravagant price.

Best Dirt Bike Helmets Buyers Guide

Best Dirt Bike Helmets Review

What should we consider when looking at the best dirt bike helmets? Well, there’s a lot to think about. Helmets are probably the most important accessory we need when riding. So, we have to make sure we find a good one.

Size and fit are major factors. No one wants a helmet that they have to keep adjusting. The lid should fit tightly, even when shaking our head or riding over rough terrain. Although it needs to be tight, this doesn’t mean it should be uncomfortable.

The last thing we want while racing is the distraction of discomfort. Ideally, the helmet should allow the riders head to nestle in, enveloping it in the padding.

The helmet has got to be constructed from a suitable material. EPP is one of the best options here. Not only does it work hard to absorb shock, it recovers easily from damage. It offers a superior level of protection, as well as bouncing back with ease.

It would be nice if that inner material was backed by other layers of protection too. EPO and EPS are both excellent supporting actors. And then there are other newer technologies, such as MIPS or turbines. Try to choose a helmet with as many layers of defense as possible.

So that’s the interior, what about the outer shell?

Top Best Dirt Bike Helmets

Fiberglass is often used for helmet construction. It’s sturdy, it’s rigid, and it’s light. Remember, though, some helmets we looked at here are made from super fiber. It is a massive six times more effective than regular fiberglass but comes with the extra price tag. And then there’s carbon fiber. This is more rigid than fiberglass. While that’s awesome, it is also a little heavier and often more expensive too.

The helmet’s shape is crucial when it comes to the exterior. We need speed. The helmet should have an aerodynamic design and have been tested in a range of situations.

Now when dirt biking, we wear goggles. They’re the perfect way to keep the dust out of our eyes. But we’ve sometimes run into problems with the goggles starting to slip, especially when we’re sweaty after a long day on the track.

How do we solve this problem?

Choose a helmet with ridges or grooves. Many dirt bike helmets feature an extra gap in the back. The goggles strap plants itself, reducing the risk of slipping.

We have to talk about ventilation. Dirt biking is one of the most physically demanding sports around. And with all the gear, it gets pretty hot and heavy extremely quickly. A decent ventilation system is essential. We need that air running through.

The lid should have an ample number of vents both at the front and in the back for optimal flow.

Oh, and we can’t finish the guide without mentioning weight. When racing, we don’t want a heavy lid slowing us down. The helmet should weigh as little as possible, without sacrificing any protective features.

Remember, dirt bike helmets are not cheap items. But usually, we get what we pay for. When picking a helmet, we recommend choosing quality over price every time.

Well, it wasn’t an easy decision. But ultimately, we’ve gone for the…

Leatt GPX 6.5 Carbon V19.1 Helmet-XS

Why? Although it’s reasonably priced, it doesn’t skimp on quality. That 360° turbine system is just unbeatable. Combined with impact foam and a low volume shell, it does offer outstanding protection.

And remember that hydration system we’d mentioned earlier? Well, that’s just the cherry on top. Sometimes, it’s those little touches that nudge an item into first place.

So, there you have it, a full rundown of the best helmets for dirt bikes currently available. We hope this review helped you decide which is best for you.

Happy riding, folks.
